The 6 Days Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. This quieter and less-travelled path offers a more remote and wild trekking experience, with a gradual ascent ideal for acclimatisation. The 6-day itinerary takes you through beautiful wilderness areas, alpine moorland, and rugged high-altitude desert, culminating in a challenging but rewarding summit push via Gillman’s Point to Uhuru Peak. Descent is made via the Marangu Route, offering a scenic contrast. With lower foot traffic and high success rates, Rongai is perfect for those seeking a unique and peaceful climb. Your journey begins with a drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration. After formalities, continue by vehicle to the Rongai trailhead near the village of Nale Moru. The trek starts through farmlands before entering a peaceful pine forest rich in wildlife. The trail is gentle and offers a gradual climb to First Cave Camp, located at the edge of the moorland zone. From the campsite, enjoy sweeping views of the Kenyan plains. This first day offers a tranquil introduction to the northern side of Kilimanjaro.
Distance: 7 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Overnight at First Cave Camp
After breakfast, begin a steady ascent to Second Cave (3,450m), with magnificent views of Kibo Peak and the Eastern Icefields emerging along the trail. Leaving the main path, you head across open moorland toward the jagged Mawenzi Peaks, a dramatic backdrop. Today’s trek offers more open terrain and changing vegetation, creating a sense of adventure. Camp is set near Kikelewa Caves, in a sheltered valley ideal for rest and acclimatisation. This longer trekking day sets you up for success on the days ahead.
Distance: 15 km | Time: 5–7 hrs | Overnight at Kikelewa Cave Camp
Today’s trail begins with a short but steep ascent up grassy slopes. As you climb, the landscape opens into a vast alpine wilderness with panoramic views in all directions. After a rewarding hike, you arrive at Mawenzi Tarn, tucked beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. This high-altitude camp is stunning and remote. Spend the remainder of the day resting or exploring the area to assist with acclimatisation. The camp’s location by a small lake provides a serene atmosphere in the shadow of Kilimanjaro’s lesser-known peak.
Distance: 10 km | Time: 5–7 hrs | Overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp
After an early breakfast, you depart Mawenzi Tarn and cross The Saddle, a stark, windswept plain of alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail becomes more barren as you gain elevation, with spectacular views toward the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro. After 6–7 hours, you arrive at Kibo Hut (also known as School Hut), situated at the base of Kibo’s crater wall. Here, you’ll eat, rest, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Hydration, mental focus, and early sleep are essential before your final push to Uhuru Peak.
Distance: 8 km | Time: 6–7 hrs | Overnight at Kibo Hut
You’ll be woken around midnight to begin your summit push under the stars. The trail ascends steep volcanic scree, taking you past Hans Meyer’s Cave to reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim at sunrise. From there, continue another 1–2 hours along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896m)—the highest point in Africa. Celebrate this unforgettable moment before descending back to Kibo Hut, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest after this physically demanding day.
Trekking: 12–14 hrs total | Overnight at Horombo Hut
On your final day, descend through the moorland and lush rainforest, retracing your steps via Mandara Hut to reach Marangu Gate. The descent takes about 6–7 hours. Upon reaching the gate, you receive your summit certificate, say farewell to your mountain team, and meet your driver. A comfortable transfer returns you to your hotel in Arusha, where you can relax and celebrate your incredible achievement on Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route. 6 Days Rongai Route
