The 6-days Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the lush rainforest at Machame Gate, the trail ascends through varied landscapes including heath, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers. Each day presents new scenery, with highlights such as the dramatic Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the Great Barranco Wall, and panoramic views from Barafu Camp. The summit attempt begins at midnight, leading to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres – Africa’s highest point. Although physically challenging, the route offers good opportunities for acclimatisation through the “climb high, sleep low” approach. It’s best suited for adventurous trekkers with strong fitness levels and a desire for a rewarding, unforgettable high-altitude experience. The descent is via the Mweka Route, offering a faster return through beautiful rainforest. A guided climb ensures safety, support, and maximises your chances of reaching the summit.
Your 6-days Machame Route begins with a drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate, where you will register and commence your trek. Today’s hike takes you through lush montane forest, a verdant environment teeming with birdlife and unique flora. The trek typically takes 4 to 5 hours, leading you gradually to Machame Camp. This camp is situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres (9,842 feet), where you’ll settle in for the night and begin acclimatising to the higher elevation.
Depart Machame Camp and continue your journey through the forest, ascending into the heathland zone. As the vegetation changes, so does the landscape, with views opening up over the plains below. After about 5 to 6 hours of hiking, you’ll cross the scenic Shira Plateau and reach Shira Camp, positioned at 3,840 metres (12,597 feet). This day offers excellent opportunities for photography and further acclimatisation to the increasing altitude.
Today’s route is designed to help with acclimatisation. From Shira Camp, you ascend to the Lava Tower at 4,630 metres (15,190 feet), a prominent landmark. This stretch typically takes 4 to 5 hours and provides a test of your adaptation to altitude. After a rest and lunch near Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, located at 3,960 metres (13,000 feet). The drop in altitude while sleeping helps with acclimatisation, despite the day’s higher elevation gain.
Begin your day by tackling the impressive Great Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable climb that offers rewarding views from the top. The climb takes around 2 to 3 hours. After the wall, the trail winds through alpine desert terrain to the Karanga Valley. From here, you reach Karanga Camp, perched at 4,000 metres (13,123 feet), where you’ll rest and prepare for the final push to the higher camps.
Continue your ascent from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, the final staging point before the summit attempt. This section of the trail typically takes 4 to 5 hours and crosses barren, windswept landscapes. Barafu Camp sits at an altitude of 4,600 metres (15,091 feet), where you’ll rest and eat an early dinner before preparing for the summit trek. The camp offers panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Summit day begins around midnight with a strenuous ascent in the dark. The climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), takes approximately 8 to 10 hours. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a breathtaking experience. After celebratory photos, descend to Barafu Camp briefly before continuing to Mweka Camp, located at 3,100 metres (10,171 feet). The descent takes 4 to 6 hours. Enjoy your final evening of 6-days Machame Route on the mountain with a sense of accomplishment.
