The 6-day Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the lush rainforest at Machame Gate, the trail ascends through varied landscapes including heath, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers. Each day presents new scenery, with highlights such as the dramatic Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the Great Barranco Wall, and panoramic views from Barafu Camp. The summit attempt begins at midnight, leading to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres – Africa’s highest point. Although physically challenging, the route offers good opportunities for acclimatisation through the “climb high, sleep low” approach.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a scenic drive through the lush foothills to the Marangu Gate, located at 1,372 metres on the southeastern side of the mountain. After registering and meeting your guides and porters, you’ll begin your trek through dense rainforest. The trail, rich with exotic birds, colobus monkeys, orchids, and mosses, leads you to Mandara Hut after a 4–5 hour hike. If skies are clear, enjoy sweeping views of Moshi town below. Mandara Hut consists of simple A-frame huts with bunk beds, providing a comfortable first-night stay in the wilderness.

Today’s trek begins with a steep climb through the last section of rainforest before entering an alpine meadow dominated by giant heather. Kilimanjaro’s twin peaks—Kibo and Mawenzi—soon come into view as you ascend through heath and moorland landscapes. The trail becomes more open and rugged, providing breathtaking views and a real sense of wilderness. After a 5 to 7-hour hike and a gain of over 1,000 metres in elevation, you’ll reach Horombo Hut, another group of wooden huts where trekkers gather to rest and acclimatise.

This day is dedicated to acclimatisation—an essential part of a successful summit attempt. You’ll stay at Horombo Hut but take a moderate acclimatisation hike, typically to the base of Mawenzi Peak (around 4,600m), before returning to the hut. This round-trip hike takes about 4–5 hours and helps your body adjust to the altitude. The views during this walk are dramatic, showcasing the vast Saddle and towering Mawenzi. Spending the night again at Horombo gives your body valuable time to adapt, increasing your chances of reaching the summit.

The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you leave behind the moorland and enter a rocky alpine desert. You’ll skirt Mawenzi Peak and pass the last water point before crossing the Saddle—a wide, almost lunar plain between Kibo and Mawenzi. The hike to Kibo Hut takes 5–7 hours and involves minimal vegetation, extreme dryness, and dramatic views of the summit ahead. At Kibo Hut (4,705m), rest and prepare for your summit push. Pack only essentials, eat well, and sleep early—you’ll begin the summit climb around midnight.

This is the toughest yet most rewarding day of the trek. You’ll begin the ascent just after midnight, zigzagging up a frozen scree slope under torchlight. After reaching Hans Meyer’s Cave and pushing through steep terrain, you’ll arrive at Gillman’s Point (5,685m) by sunrise. For those who persevere, continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,896m)—Africa’s highest point! After celebrating at the summit, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, then continue to Horombo Hut. The total trekking time can exceed 12 hours.

On your final day, descend rapidly through the moorland and lush rainforest, retracing your steps past Mandara Hut and continuing to Marangu Gate. The descent takes approximately 6–7 hours. Upon arrival at the gate, collect your summit certificates and celebrate your achievement before driving back to Arusha. Breakfast and lunch are included today, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience via the Marangu Route.
